‘Plan bridge over Nethravati waters’

Route will be vital in proposed ring road across the city

June 11, 2014 01:17 pm | Updated 01:17 pm IST - Mangalore:

U.T. Khader, Minister of Health and Family Welfare and Mangalore MLA, directed the district administration to plan the construction of a bridge connecting Adyar and Harekal across the Nethravati.

He was talking at a meeting at the Ullal Town Municipal Council here on Tuesday.

Mr. Khader said providing a connecting route between the two gram panchayats would ease the flow of traffic to the city from areas such as Konaje, Pavoor, Boliyar, Mudipu on the national highway 66 via Thokkottu.

Furthermore, he said, the bridge would also form a crucial link in a proposed ring road across the city and connect those places directly to the national highway 75 (Mangalore-Bangalore) at Adyar.

Mangalore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) Commissioner Mohammad Nazeer said a feasibility survey would be conducted.

However, he estimated the cost of the bridge to be up to Rs. 40 crore.

Better traffic management

Meanwhile, the Minister announced the foundation-laying ceremony for the Rs. 4.5 crore Ullal Town Hall on June 21.

After being greeted with complaints of the long traffic snarls at Thokottu junction, where the National Highway Authority of India is constructing a flyover, Mr. Khader directed officials to ensure smooth passage of traffic by planning diversions.

He also directed the officials of the Regional Transport Office to ensure better bus connectivity to Pajeer, Harekal, Kojpadi and Meramajalu, while also asking them to ensure the KSRTC bus route towards Mudipu makes a mandatory stop at Mangalore University.
