The Dakshina Kannada Angavikalara Federation has asked the State Government to give the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities with powers to take disciplinary action against associations and government officials who do not look at the problems of the people with disabilities.
This is among the several demands included in a memorandum prepared during the annual meeting of the Federation held at the Town Hall on Monday. A memorandum would be given to Deputy Commissioner N.S. Channappa Gowda, said federation's vice-president Madhava Ullal.
The federation said the State Commissioner had been only inquiring into the complaints and submitting his findings to the Government. The commissioner's findings would have any effect only when he had the power to take action against the associations and government officials. Creation of a development corporation for the disabled was one of its other main demands.
At the function, the federation presented six wheelchairs, six tricycles, five sets of utensils, 60 sets of textbooks, 25 pairs of clutches, and 50 scholarships for the people with disabilities.
Mangalore MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, Chief Executive Officer of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat K.N. Vijay Prakash and Gurudevananda Swamiji from Odiyoor Math were present.
