Meenakshi Bannanje, president of Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC), said on Friday that people should watch and encourage good films which focus on social issues.

She was speaking after inaugurating a film festival, screening award-winning films, organised by the Department of Information Diana Theatre, here.

Ms. Bannanje said that films are an effective medium to create awareness among people about various issues. “More interesting films should get produced. People should also watch award winning films as they offered a different perspective on various issues,” she said.

Kathyayini Kunjibettu, writer, said that good films explore emotions which could not be captured by languages. She recalled that watching Satyajit Ray’s Pather Panchali and other good films had given a totally new dimension of understanding life and its vicissitudes.

Even if a film was produced in a different language, it was possible for the viewers to understand the emotions of the different characters. This gave one the feeling that the entire humanity was one, she said.

Dinesh Attavar, Tulu film artiste, said that people should watch films in theatres and encourage good films.

People were staying away from the film theatres for a variety of reasons. Yet the Department of Information had taken up the task of screening good films in a theatre, he said.

Gracy Gonsalves, Deputy Director of Women and Child Welfare, and others were present. Rohini K., District Information Officer, welcomed the gathering. Veena, Taluk Child Development Officer, proposed a vote of thanks.

The films are being screened only for the morning show at the theatre. While the film ‘Amaravati’ was screened on Friday, the other films which will be screened are: Kirik Party on November 18, Rama Rama Re on November 19, Mudipu (Tulu) on November 20, U Turn on November 21, Allama on November 22 and Marikondavaru on November 23.
