July 09, 2011 11:58 am | Updated 11:58 am IST - MANGALORE:

People of Karinje ward in Moodbidri sent back a team of revenue officials which went there to conduct a survey for a solid waste dumping yard on Friday.

The people led by K. Krishnaraj Hegde, who represents the ward in Moodbidri municipality, opposed the move by the officials and sent them back.

Police protection

Mr. Hegde told The Hindu over the phone that the officials with police protection arrived in Karinje at 6.45 a.m. to conduct a survey and level the ground.

The people opposing the dumping yard did not allow the team to dig trenches and level the land.

The team was led by the Moodbidri tahsildar and the chief officer of the municipality.

After heated arguments, the team left Karinje in the evening, he said.

He said that the people had been urging the municipality to show them any model dumping yard which was not harmful to environment.

Meeting

As the people demanded that the officials clear their doubts, a meeting had been convened on Sunday, he said.

Mr. Hegde said that the municipality had planned to set up the yard on four acres of land.
