Seer says delay in arresting the culprits has raised questions about the police efficacy
Vishwesha Tirtha Swami of Pejawar math, and Udupi Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo have condemned the Manipal gang-rape incident.
Swami told presspersons on Monday said that society which did not protect and respect its women could never progress. “Women should be able to go out without fear,” he said.
Calling for exemplary punishment, he expressed shock over the decline of moral values in the society. “The delay in arresting the culprits had raised questions about the efficacy of the police. Arrest the criminals and remove fear from the minds of people,” the seer said.
Dr. Lobo said that even before the Delhi gang-rape incident could be forgotten, the abduction and gang-rape of a medical student in Manipal had stunned people and shaken their conscience. The incident deserves to be condemned severely. He prayed that such an incident did not recur. The act has made the civil society to hang its head in shame. There should be more awareness in the society against such atrocities. A large number of students from different parts of the country and abroad study in Manipal.
“It is necessary to provide adequate security to the students so that a congenial atmosphere could be created for their overall development,” he said.
The civil society should support to the victim and every responsible citizen should cooperate in this regard, he said in a release.
