Two parks, which are ready, have not yet been opened in the city for different reasons. The parks are exclusively for women, and children with disabilities.
During an interaction with journalists here on Saturday, outgoing Commissioner of Mangalore City Corporation K.N. Vijay Prakash said the opening of the park for women at Hathills near Lady Hill had been delayed owing to “unavoidable reasons”.
He said the 1.5 acre park was ready for use, but would be further developed at a cost of Rs. 25 lakh from the second grant of Rs. 100 crore, which was likely to be made to the MCC. The other park, meant for children with disabilities in Gandhinagar area, is ready except that due to the monsoon, the installation of the specialised play equipment for children has been delayed.
Street vendors
A solution had been worked out for street vendors, and they would be allowed to hawk in two areas (at the space adjacent to the road at the goods vehicles stand at Rao and Rao Circle near the State Bank area, and the space behind the Town Hall. A proposal had been sent to the State Government seeking sanction for a police enforcement cell to assist revenue and town planning officials during eviction drives.
He said that the MCC had formed a special purpose vehicle (special body) with the Mangalore Special Economic Zone Limited to facilitate treatment of sewage.
Mr. Vijay Prakash said that no ward could boast of all-round development, but named Kannur, Padil, Suratkal, Shivanagara and Mahakalipadpu as areas that needed more attention.
Mr. Vijay Prakash has been appointed as Chief Executive Officer of the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat.
