Owner-tenant disputes to be resolved soon: Sorake

August 12, 2013 04:16 pm | Updated October 22, 2016 12:32 pm IST - Udupi:

Vinay Kumar Sorake, Urban Development Minister, said on Saturday that the government will make all efforts to resolve the dispute prevailing between owners and tenants under the Moolageni tenancy system in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts.

He was speaking at a mass contact programme organised by the Moolageni Okkalu Rakshana Vedike here.

Mr. Sorake said the State government had passed the Karnataka Conferment of Ownership on Mulageni or Volamulageni Tenants Bill, 2011, conferring the rights on Moolageni tenants to become owners of the holdings in their possessions while providing compensation to landlords. The Bill received the assent of the President in August 2012.

But a few landlords had approached the court asking for higher assessment of their land. The court in turn had sought the views of the State government. Landlords wanted higher compensation.

Meeting soon

Hence, the government had decided to call a meeting of both landlords and tenants to resolve the issue amicably. The meeting would be held under the leadership of the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Oscar Fernandes.
