Vasanth V. Salian says widening work on NH 66 remains incomplete

The former minister and Janata Dal (Secular) leader Vasanth V. Salian said on Wednesday urged the Union Minister for Roads and Highways Oscar Fernandes to improve the pathetic condition of national highways across Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts.

Addressing presspersons here, Mr. Salian said that the widening of the National Highway 66 from Surathkal to Kundapur had been completed only half in the past three years. The half-completed projects were posing a lot of problems in many places including Kaup and Katpady. The construction of underpass had not been taken up near Hale Marigudi Temple at Kaup causing traffic problems.

Similarly the road to the NCC Training Camp at Udyavara was blocked due to the widening work creating problems for people proceeding to the camp and surrounding areas. There were lots of autorickshaw and tempo stands close to NH 66, alternate arrangements should be made for them. “Mr. Fernandes should call a meeting of all political parties and experts to discuss these issues,” he said.

Most of the roads in the district, including roads managed by the Public Works Department (PWD) and zilla panchayat, were in bad shape as storm water drains had not been constructed, he said.
