‘BJP leaders only give sermons on culture and tradition’

The Opposition parties in Udupi on Thursday hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after a ‘sex CD’ featuring a man purported to be Udupi MLA K. Raghupati Bhat in bed with a woman was aired on a Kannada news channel on Thursday.

The veracity of the black and white video or the claim is not yet established.

Gopal Bhandary, Karkala MLA and Congress leader, said the ‘sex CD’ had exposed the true face of the BJP. “Their (BJP) leaders give long sermons on culture and tradition. But their deeds are anything but clean and cultured,” he said.

“The sleaze tape is nothing new for the BJP. It is an addition to the long list of scandals faced by the party. They sponsored a ‘rave party’ at the St. Mary’s Island near Udupi in the name of Spring Zouk Island Festival in February 2012,” Mr. Bhandary said.

Pramod Madhwaraj, president of the Udupi Block Congress Committee, however, termed the issue as “a personal matter”. “But we are confident of winning the Udupi seat regardless of whom the BJP names as candidate.”

Deviprasad Shetty, president of the district unit of Janata Dal (Secular), said the sleaze CD was the last nail in the coffin of scams and scandals dogging the BJP.

Mr. Bhat has brought disrepute not just to himself but to the district also, Mr. Shetty said and added: “It is a blot on our district which is known for its intellectual credentials.”

Admar Sripathi Acharya, leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), said the sleaze tape, if genuine, showed the degeneration of the BJP.

“It is not the question of an individual but of the party,” he said.
