A 17-year-old student died while five of his classmates were injured when the car they were travelling in hit a stationary private bus near the National Institute of Technology-Karnataka in Surathkal on Saturday afternoon.
The Mangalore Traffic North police said the six students were going towards Udupi. The bus, also going towards Udupi, was carrying employees of a company operating in Padubidri. The bus had stopped by the side of the National Highway at Tamabail.
The police said that the driver of the car lost control over the vehicle and hit the bus. Mohammed Ashal died on the spot. The injured students were admitted to a private hospital in Surathkal.
The police said the car was driven by Mohammed Rizwan (17) of Katipalla with Ashal on the front passenger seat. Afridi (17), Nikhil (16), Munaf (17) from Attavar, and Syed Shah (16) from Kudroli were in the rear.
The car belonged to Mohammed Rizwan’s relative, who is staying abroad, the police said.
The police said the victims were students of St. Aloysius PU College. The students were not in the college uniform, the police added.
Ashal was the youngest of the four children of Ibrahim, who runs a workshop in Baikampady Industrial Estate. Mustaq, son of Ibrahim’s younger brother, said that Ashal was a studious boy and was good in sports. He was well-mannered and had good relations with the neighbours. Mustaq said Ashal had not informed the family about the drive he went on with his classmates.
