New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) has handled a record number of six container vessels from December 17 to 20, says an official release. Of these, two were mainline and four were feeder vessels. These vessels contributed 2,173 TEUs to the container traffic of the port. By handling 611 TEUs in a day on December 17, the port surpassed its earlier record of 555 TEUs (handled on September 26, 2010). Yet another record is that on December 18 and 19, three container vessels were handled simultaneously at the port.

The two mainline vessels called directly from East Africa, taking the total mainline vessels handled at the port this year to four.

P. Tamilvanan, Chairman, NMPT, said that the port could achieve a growth rate of 43 per cent this year by handling 29,483 TEUs as against 20,493 TEUs handled during the corresponding period of the previous year.
