Steps are being taken in three or four days to decongest the Nantoor Junction on the Udupi-Kasaragod National Highway and make it safe for users, according to Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim who visited the spot.

Fears have been expressed for a long time about this junction being unsafe. Recently, a few deaths have taken place causing public protests also.

Mr. Ibrahim on Monday listed out the steps being taken to make the junction safe in the next three to four days. The bus-stop for vehicles going towards KPT junction would be shifted to prevent traffic jams near the Nantoor Junction. The wide medians would be trimmed to create more space to negotiate the big roundabout.

In addition the road leading to the junction from KPT would be made two-lane to make the left turns towards Bikarnakatte easy. Flower vendors would be moved out of the junction.

The Deputy Commissioner said construction of an underpass was a permanent solution to the problem at the junction. An official of the National Highways Authority of India said the Rs. 53-crore underpass proposed to take on the traffic on the national highway was pending with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
