Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and Udupi MP Shobha Karandlaje were among the protesters arrested in B.C. Road, near Bantwal, on Friday.
Mr. Kateel and Ms. Karandlaje were among those who took part in the protest on Friday called by the Bharatiya Janata Party, Bajrang Dal and other allied organisations against the assault on RSS activist Sharath at B.C Road on July 4.
The protest was being held in violation of prohibitory orders under Section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code, which is in force in Bantwal, Puttur, Belthangady and Sullia taluks till July 11.
A large number of policemen were deployed in B.C. Road to maintain peace. The police from different parts of the State were called as Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was scheduled to take part in a Congress convention on the outskirts of Mangaluru in the afternoon. Even as the protesters congregated at the venue, the police arrested Mr. Kateel, Ms. Karandlaje, Karkala MLA Sunil Kumar, Sullia MLA Angara and MLC Ganesh Karnik. Shops and business establishments remained in the area remained closed till noon.
