The Mangalore University has reserved Rs. 20 lakh for attracting students to basic science in the 2013-14 budget.
The Rs. 5.76-crore deficit budget was presented at the Academic Council meeting of the university on Saturday.
The budget has estimated total receipts at Rs. 168.97 crore and expenditure at Rs. 174.73 crore. The deficit amount would be met by the government grants expected in the next financial year, the Vice-Chancellor T. C. Shivashankara Murthy told the meeting.
Mr. Murthy said that of Rs. 20 lakh the university will award Rs. 5,000 a year as scholarship to each of the 400 top scorers in science stream (physics, chemistry, mathematics, botany and zoology) in undergraduate courses from the next academic year 2013-14. The budget document has reserved Rs. one lakh for the activities of newly constituted Sensitisation, Prevention and Redressal of Sexual Harassment (SPARSH) cell at the university.
It has reserved Rs. 7 crore for constructing a Pareeksha Bhawan on the campus and Rs. 8 crore for constructing buildings at the upcoming postgraduate centre of Chikkaluvaru in Kodagu district.
Mr. Murthy said that the centre spread over 72 acres was at 46 k.m. away from Madikeri and 16 k.m. away from Kushalnagar. The university is building a science block, an arts block, six housing blocks for teachers, two hostels for women and men with 20 rooms each. All of them are expected to be ready by the end of September, 2013.
PG centre at Udupi
The Vice-Chancellor said that Udupi district administration has come forward to sanction either 24 acres in Belapu village or 20 acres in Uppur village for opening a postgraduate centre.
