If women are to be respected more in society, mothers first should be happy about giving birth to a baby girl, said Sampath Pal, commander, Gulabi Gang, and crusader for women’s rights here on Sunday.

Addressing a gathering at the All India Lioness Conference, 2015, she said that mothers often rejoiced whenever they gave birth to a baby boy but disliked if it was a baby girl. The discrimination was not correct. Mothers should shun this attitude to take the honour of women to greater heights, she added.

She said that even the elders blessed the couple for having a male child but not a female child.

Ms. Pal said that it was the people who formed the government and not the other way around.

Hence the people should understand that if they worked together for the betterment of society positive changes could be brought about.

Narrating her life story she said that she got married when she was 12 years old and her husband and in-laws exploited her a lot.

But she faced all odds in life boldly and rose to a respectable position in society now. She said that now she was learning English through her daughter-in-law.

“We should remain united. That is my message for 2015,” she said.
