Following a case of mistaken identity, an engineer, who returned from Dammam in Saudi Arabia on Thursday morning, had to spend nearly 10 hours in two police stations in Mangaluru.

Mohammed Ashfaq, 26, a resident of Kulai, while undergoing checking at the airport, was allegedly served a lookout notice, which related to the murder of Shivaraj Kodikere in 2012.

He informed his parents, who informed Democratic Youth Federation of India State President Muneer Katipalla.

Mr. Katipalla went to the Bajpe police and said that the notice related to Ashfar, the accused in the murder.

Ashfaq was then sent to Panambur police. As the police were going through the records, Mr. Katipalla sought the intervention of Police Commissioner T.R. Suresh.

After realising the mistake, the police released Ashfaq.

Mr. Suresh said the confusion was following wrong entry of the name of the absconding accused. Incidentally, absconding accused and Ashfaq belong to the same area and the names of parents of two were the same.
