Fed up with the “callous attitude” of the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) in addressing problems of bad roads, garbage accumulation, intermittent water supply, faulty drainage lines, non-functioning street lights among others, residents of Milagres and Falnir wards have joined hands to start a residents’ welfare association that will be formally inaugurated on March 17.
The association takes its roots after several attempts by individuals to approach MCC officials did not yield result. The frustration led to a meeting of residents on October 31, 2012, where a decision was made to pursue the cause together. Earlier this year, the Milagres and Falnir Wards Residents Welfare Association came into being and the body has since enrolled 219 members.
A release listed the objectives of the association as creating awareness on and safeguarding residents’ rights, tackling social issues such as drug addiction, organising community-based activities to ensure a bond among residents, imparting civic sense, and most importantly, pressuring MCC to carry out their basic duties of road repair, garbage clearance among others.
The 21-member managing committee headed by president B. Dharmana Naik, will soon appoint committees to examine the problems of the wards and chalk out strategies to address the issues, said the release.
During their last meeting on March 5, the association decided to hold the formal inauguration at Milagres Hall on March 17. N. Yogesh Bhat, MLA, will inaugurate the programme, while former MCC Commissioner J.R. lobo and Corporators of Milagres and Falnir wards, Abdul Ravoof and Jacintha Vijaya Alfred, will attend.
