The Medical Education Department is studying a proposal to start a government medial college at the District Wenlock Hospital, said Minister of State for Medical Education Sharanprakash Patil.
Talking to reporters here on Friday, Mr. Patil said the department was studying the pros and cons of starting the medical college at the district hospital, which is currently being run in association with Kasturba Medical College.
The department will be looking at the lacunae at the district hospital, including the availability of land, that needs to be addressed before recommending the start of the medical college.
Earlier, Mr. Patil and Health Minister U.T. Khader met the hospital Superintendent Rajeshwari Devi and other personnel. Dr. Devi said the hospital currently had nearly 12 acres of land and they had proposed using eight acres of the adjoining government land that would meet the requirement of 20 acres necessary for a medical college.
She said specialists working at the hospital were all from Kasturba Medical College and the college even provided diagnostic facilities for free.
The district hospital had 905 beds being used by the college to provide clinical facility to their students, she said.
Fire at CT scan centre
There was panic at the hospital for a brief period following a fire at the CT scan centre on Friday. The fire was noticed just as Mr. Patil and Mr. Khader arrived at the hospital.
Dr. Devi said that the fire occurred due to a short circuit near the air conditioning cabinet in the centre.
The fire spread to the wooden furniture nearby. The technician called the other staff and the Fire and Emergency Services personnel. It took about thirty minutes to put out the fire.
Dr. Devi said they had called the representatives of the company, whose CT scan machine has been installed, to check the damage.
The hospital will be using the CT scan facility of KMC Hospital for the time being, she said.
