The Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) is ready to take up relief work in flood-prone areas during this monsoon, Mayor Praveen said on Wednesday.

He told presspersons here that people could call 2220344 and 2220306 for help.

In addition, toll free number 155913 was available for seeking assistance.

A task force had been set up to help people. It was headed by Joint Commissioner of the corporation Vijayakumari Shenoy. Commissioner of the corporation K.N. Vijayaprakash said the civic body was removing silt from 64 main drains. In addition, silt was being removed from storm water drains.

Flood-prone areas

He said Kottara Chowki, Kannur, and Mahaveera Circle areas were prone to flood. The civic body recently cleared encroachments on a large drain at Kottara Chowki. The corporation had asked the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to cooperate with it in tackling floods in these areas. The NHAI authorities had been asked to replace large pipes on the highways with culverts for easy flow of rainwater.

The Commissioner said four boats, two from the Home Guards and two from the Department of Fisheries, would be kept ready for rescue operations.

The Commissioner agreed that the city lacked people-friendly bus shelters and bus bays.

Of the 214 bus shelters, 89 were removed while building concrete roads. The civic body would construct 10 model bus shelters. Mr. Vijayaprakash said that the corporation had identified 18 places for constructing bus bays. It would consult the Police Department before finalising the places for bus bays.
