Mass marriage to be held on Sunday

May 14, 2010 03:11 pm | Updated 03:11 pm IST - Udupi:

The Mogaveera Yuva Sanghatane and the G. Shankar Family Trust will be organising a free mass marriage of 25 eligible men and women from the Mogaveera community. It will be held on Sunday at the Madhava Mangala Mantapa of Sri Kulamahastri Amma temple at Bennekudru in Udupi district.

Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, president of the district unit of the sanghatane Satish M. Naik said that those entering wedlock on Sunday came from poor families. The aim of organising this marriage was to stop the menace of dowry and make members of the Mogaveera community shun ostentatious marriages. The sanghatane would be providing a “thalisara”, “kalungura”, a sari and a blouse piece to the brides and a kurta and a pajama for the grooms. The couple would also be given a gift by the sanghatane. All these marriages would be registered.

The sanghatane organised a mass marriage of 59 couples at the same venue last year, Mr. Naik said.

Leaders of the sanghatane Satish Amin, Sanjeeva, Shivaram Kota and Shankar Salian were present.
