The 28th Shramadan of Ramakrishna Mission’s Swatcch Mangaluru Abhiyan on Sunday not only saw areas in and around Mannagudda got a fresh look but also a garbage dumping yard being given a beautiful look.
Volunteers were divided into five groups after the programme was flagged off by Ravindranath Nayak and Praveen Shetty in the presence of Mangaluru Ramakrishna Mutt’s president Swamy Jitakamanandaji at Mahatma Gandhi Park. Mr. Shetty and Mr. Nayak said that the relentless campaign by the mission has had the desired impact on the general public about the need for cleanliness and not throwing garbage in public places.
About 50 volunteers, led by Shubha Alva and Mohammad Shameem, removed heaps of garbage dumped in an open space on Matadakani Road and cleaned the area. Pots with flowering plants were kept on the open space to dissuade people from further littering the area. Team members from Art of Living and Nivedita Balaga cleaned the road between Gandhi Park and Mannagudda Gurji.
Students from Nitte College of Physiotherapy cleaned the Urwa Market Road before visiting households and shops in the area to distribute handbills with a message on cleanliness. Volunteers also repainted direction boards in the locality which had worn out.
