Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University T.C. Shivashankara Murthy said here on Monday that the university would provide laptops to all teachers on its campus by the end of next month.

He told presspersons here on Monday that the teachers should use it for research and academic activities. The university had allocated funds for it in its 2011-12 budget. About 160 teachers would benefit from the decision.

Prof. Murthy said that 101 teachers would be provided with high-speed internet facility at their residential quarters on the campus from the university using its 1 GB capacity line.

At present, teachers had been provided with internet facility only in their respective departments and at library.

The Vice-Chancellor said the university would install 30 more computers in its cyber laboratory at the library for the benefit of students, research scholars, and teachers within a month.

This would be in addition to the 30 computers installed in the library now. Computer science students had their own separate cyber laboratory.

Prof. Murthy said the Union Department of Science and Technology had recently ranked Mangalore University 18th among the 50 top universities in the country. The department had conducted a study on its own to rank the universities in terms of research and other activities.

Based on this, the department had sanctioned the university Rs. 9 crore for strengthening science infrastructure in three years. It had released Rs. 3 crore now.

The University Grants Commission had sanctioned Rs. 2 crore for developing information, communication, and technology facilities.

To a question, the Vice-Chancellor said that re-opening of degree classes from Monday would not affect students. The evaluation of answer scripts of English was expected to be over on December 10 and that of Commerce and BBM subjects on December 13. Since colleges had guest teachers, classes of those students would not be affected. To another query, he said the university had issued show-cause notices to teachers who had set wrong English question paper for repeaters who appeared for the examination a month ago. The question paper meant for regular students had been set for 30 repeaters (students). A re-examination was conducted after setting a separate question paper.
