Mangaluru has made it to the list of six cities recommended by the State government to the Union government to consider under its ‘Smart Cities’ scheme.

The other cities recommended were Davangere, Tumakuru, Shivamogga, Belagavi and Hubballi-Dharwad, according to official sources.

The Union government on Friday received the list of a total 100 cities from all over the country for the scheme, sources told The Hindu .

Now the Union government will select 20 from among them for granting funds in this financial year. The final screening of cities to select the first 20 would be done in September and October.

The first 20 cities selected would be immediately released Rs. 2 crore each for preparing detailed project reports, sources said.

Each city selected would get Rs. 500 crore for five years from the Union government.

The respective State governments would have to contribute a matching grant of Rs. 500 crore for five years.

Thus each city would get Rs. 1,000 crore in five years for various development activities listed out in the scheme.

In the evaluation of cities as per the guidelines given by the Union government a few days ago the MCC had scored 96.88 per cent marks by topping the list in the State.

Out of 80 marks the MCC had scored 77.50 marks. The balance 20 marks were not applicable to the MCC as they were meant for cities where Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission had been approved.

The scheme among other objectives was aimed at providing round-the-clock water supply in the city selected.

The funds provided under the scheme could be utilised for power supply facilities, solid waste management and cleanliness, transport facilities, to provide low cost housing facilities to the poor, developing park and play grounds, steps to reduce traffic congestion and the like.
