Twenty-two of the 60 teams that took part in the zonal-level of Verbattle Junior debate competition were selected for the next round here on Friday.
It was open for students in class VIII to X in the age group of 12-16 years in the Mangalore zone — which includes Chikmagalur, Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu, Uttara Kannada, Udupi and Shimoga districts.
Initially the students were given a list of 10 topics like “the current education system is not equipped to deal with intelligence”, “politics has solutions to India's problem”, and “schools are breeding grounds of negativity”. The final topic for the debate was given only around 30 minutes before the session. The selected teams will take part in the next level in Bangalore on August 19 and the winner will get a Rs. 1 lakh cash prize.
Verbattle Foundation, a non-profit organisation, will hold its zonal senior-level (age group 16-24 years) debating competition on Saturday at Samruddhi Kalabhavan at Garodi near Pumpwell Circle from 9.30 a.m. Visit www.verbattle.com for details.
