As the three-day admissions for 37 post-gradudate courses in Mangalore University and its two constituent colleges ended on Wednesday, 367 seats remain vacant. Vice-Chancellor T.C. Shivashankara Murthy said the university is contemplating to invite fresh applications to fill the vacant seats.
He said the fresh applicants could be given on July 25 as the deadline for filing the applications and their admissions could be completed by this month end.
A final decision to this effect would be taken on Thursday.
Prof. Murthy said that of 1,386 seats 1,019 seats have been filled. The university had received 3,200 applications for those seats. Along with post-graduation courses in the university campus admissions had opened for courses in University College, Hampankatta and Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa College, Madikeri – the constituent colleges of the university.
The Vice-Chancellor said that some of the departments where merit category seats have remained vacant are Library Science, Geo Informatics, Yogic Science, Electronics, Bio-technology and Marine Geology.
Payment category seats have remained vacant in departments like Economics, English, History, Kannada and Sociology. He said that for those who have already been admitted, the university would allow transfer of admissions from one course to another against vacancies until the end of this month.
Prof. Murthy said that for 105 seats for M.Com. on the campus, 400 applications had been received. All the seats have been filled. University College had received 193 applications for 52 seats of M.Com., all of which were filled.
He said that for Master of Business Administration (International Business) course at University College, eight seats have been filled against 32 seats.
All of them were payment category seats meant for working class people. The classes will be held during evenings and on Saturday and Sunday.
Centralised process
Prof. Murthy said that under the centralised admissions conducted through the single-window system at Mangala auditorium, hassle-free facilities like banking counters, counter to issue eligibility certificates on the spot, issuing applications for hostels, and food counter were offered for students under the same roof.
Study chair on Jain poet
Mangalore University will prepare a statute to enable the setting up of a study chair on the 16th century poet Ratnakara Varni as the State government announced Rs. one crore for the purpose in the 2013-14 Budget.
Bharatesha Vaibhava (said to be written in 1567) is the most celebrated work of Ratnakara Varni.
Vice-Chancellor T. C. Shivashankara Murthy said the chair could be set up after the government approved the statute.
He said that Moodbidri MLA and Minister for Youth Affairs, Sports and Fisheries K. Abhayachandra Jain has promised that two acres of land would be made available at Moodbidri to construct a building to establish the chair. Until then, the chair could be located at a college in Moodbidri.
Prof. Murthy said that the minister has agreed to the request of ensuring that the building comprises separate rooms for a director, museum, library, a research scholar and other staff.
