Mangalore University has opened an international students’ centre to market the varsity abroad. It is also ready to offer four new postgraduate courses, including in Application Specific Integrated Circuit Design, on its campus from 2014-15.
Vice-Chancellor K. Byrappa told The Hindu that the centre was set up to attract foreign students for postgraduate and undergraduate courses and its two constituent colleges, University College in the city, and Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa College at Madikeri.
Efforts would be made to get foreign students for the postgraduate courses from the current academic year itself.
DirectionThe teachers in-charge of the centre, constituted a few days ago, have been directed to visit embassies and market the courses offered by the university.
He said that the centre would project the university, accredited with A-grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, aboard through the centre.
He said that the university would offer postgraduate courses in microbiology, bio-chemistry and Application Specific Integrated Circuit Design on the Mangalagangotri campus. In addition postgraduate course in education too would be offered.
A.M. Khan, chairman, Department of Electronics, which would offer Master of Science in Application Specific Integrated Circuit Design said that the course dealt with developing application oriented advanced electronic circuit. Its focus would be on developing an integrated circuit customised for a specific use and not for general purpose.Mr. Byrappa said that the constituent college at Madikeri would offer postgraduate courses in Economics and English from 2014-15.
He said that a research promotion cell had been constituted on the university campus. It would guide teachers in drafting research proposals for submission to various funding agencies and monitor research and development activities of university teachers, including teachers of constituent colleges.
The Vice-Chancellor said that the university would set up an advanced research centre at Belapu in Udupi district where its postgraduate centre would come up. A local committee of university professors, an expert committee and an international advisory committee would be constituted to guide the university on the research projects to be taken up.
Either C.N.R. Rao or U.R. Rao would be asked to head the advisory committee.
He said that the university would offer postgraduate courses in applied science subjects at Belapu from 2015-16.
Mr. Byrappa said the university had opened an information centre at Government First Grade College, Tenkanidiyoor, Udupi district, to provide information to students on courses, examinations and receive applications. The centre had an public information officer and an assistant officer.
