The Academic Council of Mangalore University in its meeting on Friday approved two separate statutes for setting up post-graduate departments of Industrial Chemistry and Master of Social Work.

Currently, the university offers post-graduate courses in Industrial Chemistry and Social Work under the Department of Chemistry and Department of Sociology respectively.

Vice-Chancellor T.C. Shivashankara Murthy who presided over the meeting told the council that if the State government approved the statutes before the commencement of the next academic year, the two departments could be opened from 2014-15.

As teachers, non-teaching staff and laboratories for starting the two departments were available, it would be only a formality to open the departments. When the courses were carved out of their present departments it would help in better management. The total number of departments in the university would then go up from 26 to 28 but the total number of post-graduate courses would remain at 38.

Hindi post-graduation

Mr. Murthy said the university’s statue for opening a post-graduation department in Hindi was awaiting the approval of the government. Meanwhile the university had constituted a committee for drafting regulations and syllabus of the Hindi (M.A.) course.

RUSA grant

The Vice-Chancellor said the university would seek about Rs. 60 crore from the Union government under the Rasthriya Ucchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) for infrastructure development and academic works.

Sitting fee hiked

The university has hiked the meeting sitting fee of members of various decision taking bodies to make it Rs. 1,000 per sitting across the board with immediate effect.
