Mangalore University will increase the monthly fellowship being given to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates pursuing research (Ph.D.) from Rs. 8,000 to Rs. 10,000 from this academic year, said Vice-Chancellor T.C. Shivashankara Murthy.

In a release, he said that the university, for the first time, will institute 15 post-doctoral fellowships for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates from this year. Each of the 15 candidates would be given Rs. 15,000 per month.

Prof. Murthy said that the university had given laptops to 28 Ph.D. SC and ST students last year. Another fresh batch of 28 students would be given laptops this year.

He said that Ph.D. SC and ST students would have to pay tuition fees, which start from a minimum of Rs. 1,200 per year. From this year onwards, the university would refund the fee to them. So far the tuition fee refund facility was being given only to SC/ ST students of undergraduate and post-graduate courses.

The Vice-Chancellor said that the university had built a separate block of 20 rooms for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students in women’s hostel on the Mangalagangotri campus. A similar block of 27 rooms for men was under construction in men’s hostel. Each room could accommodate three students. The blocks would be inaugurated after two months.

He said that bids have been invited to construct a separate hostel block for Ph.D. students of SC/ST.

Prof. Murthy said that a separate building to house Ambedkar Study and Research Centre and Buddha Study Centre would be built.
