Mangalore City Corporation Commissioner Harish Kumar K. announced on Thursday that door-to-door garbage collection would begin in all the wards from December 1. In the case of Mannagudda and Court wards only segregated – biodegradable and non-biodegradable – would be collected.
He pointed out that the corporation was committed to implement door-to-door garbage collection from December. He said Mangalore would gradually become a bin-less city. Mr. Kumar said there was no proposal to provide coloured containers to households for segregating garbage as was being done in some wards of Bangalore. In Bangalore it was being done under the Central funds. Each ward would need Rs. 10 lakh if containers were to be given, he added. Deputy Commissioner N.S. Channappa Gowda said it had been given in writing before the Lok Adalat that door-to-door garbage collection would begin by December.
