Laying the 355-km sewer network and constructing associated facilities under the Asian Development Bank (ADB) loan in the city will be over by next month end, according to a senior official.
In addition to laying the sewer network, the associated works covered constructing vet wells, sewage treatment plants, manholes, and pump houses.
The works are being implemented by Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC) for Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) under a scheme called Karnataka Urban Development and Coastal Environmental Management Project (KUDCEMP).
Mayor Gulzaar Banu had convened the meeting to review the progress of works under the project.
M. Yeshavantha Raju, Executive Engineer (in-charge), KUDCEMP, told the meeting that of 355 km. sewer network, 2.45 km. was pending because of litigation and land acquisition. Of the Rs. 214 crore estimated project, Rs. 195 crore had been spent till October end, 2012.
He said that of the works taken up under 18 packages, works of 13 packages had been completed. Works of the remaining five packages would be over by next month end. Harish Kumar K, Commissioner, Mangalore City Corporation, who was also in-charge Project Director, KUDCEMP, said that issues and litigations pertaining to land acquisition were mainly in Surathkal area. Mr. Raju said the project involved constructing 12,000 manholes.
The Executive Engineer (in-charge) said that old sewer networks covered 20 per cent of the jurisdiction of the city corporation. The new networks (under ADB loan) would cover the remaining 60 per cent area. Still the balance 20 per cent area would be left out.
Some councillors who spoke on the water supply works taken up and handed over to the city corporation in June, 2010 alleged that areas such as Marakada did not get water under the project.
