The Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Mangalore will start issuing driving licences and vehicle registration certificates (RC books) in the form of smart cards from Wednesday.

According to Regional Transport Officer J. Purushotham, separate smart cards will be issued for driving licences and vehicle registration certificates. Each smart card will cost Rs. 200.

Mr. Purushotham told The Hindu that it would take some time to issue smart cards to those who had obtained driving licences and registered their vehicles before September 16. The RTO would prepare a list of such licence-holders and vehicle owners within a month, he said. Such persons would have to obtain the smart cards within two years.

Mr. Purushotham said that so far the RTO here had issued 3.69 lakh driving licences and registered 2.71 lakh vehicles.
