February 12, 2014 01:01 pm | Updated May 18, 2016 07:39 am IST - MANGALORE:

The Customs sleuths are questioning 44-year-old Shashidharan of Kasaragod, who attempted to smuggle gold pieces by consuming them.

Shashidaran consumed 30 pieces of gold in the form of bullets, each being two cm long, when he was boarding a flight to Mangalore from Dubai on January 31. After suffering pain in the stomach, he got admitted to a private hospital in Attavar on February 5. The hospital used an endoscope to remove 29 gold pieces on February 7. The last gold piece was expelled from his body on February 9. Each gold piece weighed 15 grams.

A customs official said since his release from the hospital on Monday the sleuths had been questioning Shashidaran. “We are collecting more details. We have so far not decided on arresting Shashidaran,” the official said.
