Activists in the city are planning to organise a public meeting to protest against the alleged filming of two medicos after forcing them to have sex by a gang of history-sheeters.
The activists said the meeting would be a platform for concerned citizens to voice their opinion and pressure political representatives and administration to take action.
Vidya Dinker, Convenor of Forum Against Atrocities on Women, said the public meeting would be held in the city on Thursday to collectively think of a strategy to speak on and respond to the incident.
She said there had not been “the right kind of action or even words” seen or heard by people’s representatives, administration, and by the general public. “The civil society has not voiced its angst sufficiently… Every citizen of Mangalore has to speak up,” Ms. Dinker said, and added that the culprits, otherwise, would think they could get away with anything.
Other than providing an avenue for people’s protest, the meet will also support the victims. Narendra Nayak, president of the Federation of Indian Rationalist Associations, said the victims in such incidents do not complain for fear of criticism from the patriarchal society. The meeting to be held should be a public show of strength. It should encourage victims to come forward and complain against the wrongdoers. It would also aim at forming a network for supporting victims. Mr. Nayak said there were several such cases in the region which required public attention.
