A 50-year-old who was arrested and remanded to judicial custody for allegedly assaulting a woman, sustained a nose injury following a tiff with a fellow inmate in the Mangalore District Prison on Tuesday.

The Konaje police on Monday arrested Shailesh Rai for allegedly assaulting a woman passing through his land with a herd of cattle. Mr. Rai allegedly assaulted the girl’s father and sister who reportedly tried to prevent the assault on the girl. Based on a complaint, Mr. Rai was arrested by the police and was later remanded to the district prison.

On Tuesday morning, an undertrial reportedly questioned Mr. Rai’s act of cleaning a few articles near the bathroom in a cell in the prison. This led to heated exchange between the undertrial and Mr. Rai, and the two exchanged blows. A prison staff noticed Mr. Rai’s bleeding nose and sent him with a police escort for treatment at the Government Wenlock Hospital.

A prison official said Mr. Rai had not identified the person who injured him Intimation about the incident has been sent to the jurisdictional Barke police, the official said.

Clashes involving inmates and prison staff have been reported at regular intervals in the Mangalore District prison. Recently, 10 policemen including Assistant Commissioner of Police K. Tilakchandra, were injured when inmates attacked them in the prison on June 9. This led to the shifting of six prison inmates to Dharwad and Gulbarga Central Prison.
