Man held on charge of raping minor

A driver of Kateel, who was accused of raping a minor girl, was arrested by Ullal police Thursday night. The police said Yatish Poojary (25), who works as a driver in Padubidri, had gotten acquainted with a class 9 student in Ullal. In the ruse of taking the girl to his relative’s house in Kateel, Mr. Poojary is accused of taking her to an empty house there and raping her over a period of two days. He then dropped her near her house on December 16, threatening her with dire consequences if she told her family, said the Ullal Police. However, she told her family and a complaint was lodged at Ullal Police Station.

Two killed in bike crash

A motorcyclist and a pillion rider died after they crashed into a parked pick-up truck in Chennathur, Bantwal taluk on Friday. After losing control at a curve, the motorcycle driven by Sharath Kumar (20) skid on the road and collided with the truck. Both he and the pillion rider, Suresh Shetty (40) died on the spot. According to a complaint given to the Punjalkatte police, by the driver of the truck, the two were speeding.

‘Abusive’ husband held

Mullki police arrested a real estate broker on Friday for allegedly locking his wife of 23 years in their house in Ajar near Kateel for more than a week, during the course of which, he was reported to have physically and mentally harassed her. Madhava Poojary (55) was arrested after his wife Sulochana (48) was released from the house by neighbours and police officials. The matter came to light when neighbours informed an anganwadi worker, who found a bruised Sulochana locked inside the house.

In her complaint, Sulochana said she had been beaten, abused, and deprived of food during her captivity.

Suicide

A 29-year-old daily wage worker hanged himself in Shirlalu village in Belthangady taluk on Wednesday. Venoor police said Narayana Malekudiya, inexplicably set off outside when his family chastised him for coming home drunk. His body was found hanging from a tree Friday morning.
