Man gets seven years RI for raping 13-year-old girl

The Second Additional District and Sessions Court here on Wednesday sentenced a 27-year-old man to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 10,000 upon finding him guilty of raping a 13-year-old girl.

Judge Uma M.G. convicted Dinesh Amin (27), a resident of Paduperar village, Mangalore taluk, for raping the girl. The prosecution said Amin and his friend Manoj B. Shetty, an autorickshaw driver, raped the girl. Shetty, who knew the girl, brought her to his house and raped her. He then called his friend Amin, who also raped the girl on June 24, 2011, around 10.30 a.m. Shetty is reportedly absconding.

The girl, who belongs to a Scheduled Caste community, went home and informed her mother about the incident. The girl’s mother filed a complaint with the Bajpe police station. The police then arrested Dinesh Amin. They are still searching Manoj Shetty.

The court split the case and tried Amin.

As many as 15 witnesses were examined by Prosecutor C. Venkataramana Swamy. The victim identified Amin as one of the two persons who raped her. The Judge convicted Amin under section 376 of the Indian Penal Code. Of the fine amount of Rs. 10,000, the court has directed Amin to pay Rs. 8,000 to the victim while Rs. 2,000 to the State government. If Amin fails to pay the fine, he would have to undergo imprisonment of additional six months.

Case in CBI hands, court told

The Criminal Investigation Department informed a city sessions court here of State government’s decision to hand over to the CBI the probe of the rape and murder of a 17-year-old girl, whose body was found in Dharmasthala a year ago.

The State government decided to hand over the case to the CBI following demonstrations by relatives of the victims and other organisations, who alleged involvement of influential persons in the rape and murder that occurred on October 9, 2012. Train hits youth

A youth was killed, when he was hit by a train near Nandikur village near Padubidri in Udupi on Wednesday.

Padubidri police said Rajesh Sherigar (25), a resident of Moodabettu village, was killed when he was hit by the Mumbai CST -Mangalore Express train around 11.45 a.m.
