A 29-year-old man was allegedly assaulted by a group of 22 people in Kumpala near Ullal on Saturday night when he was returning from special prayers for Ramzan. However, he managed to escape from the attackers, police said.

Ullal police, who have registered a case, have arrested two persons in this connection. Their names were given as Sharat and Kusumadhar.

According to the First Information Report, Afzal, a resident of Kumpala, was allegedly attacked by Roshan, Vindod Kumar, Ashwath, Hariprasad, Shubakar, Sharat and Kusumadhar and 15 others.

Commissioner of Police Seemant Kumar Singh told The Hindu on Sunday that it all began as a “verbal duel” and later turned into a brawl. Identification of those involved in the incident was going on, he said.
