To ensure that property buyers do not fall prey to unscrupulous real-estate agents or property developers, the district administration is contemplating setting up a Mahiti Kendra (information centre) in about two months.
Deputy Commissioner V. Ponnuraj told presspersons here on Wednesday that the centre would also help planned development of the city.
The proposed centre will be set up “jointly by the Mangalore City Corporation, the Mangalore Urban Development Authority, the Revenue Department, and the Sub-Registrar's Office. In all probability it will be operational within two months,” he said.
The information centre will be located either in the Deputy Commissioner's office or on the premises of MUDA, Mr. Ponnuraj said.
Service would be provided to prospective buyers in two phases. In the first phase, people would be given information about the procedure involved in the purchase of land and the documents required for the transaction. If prospective buyers proceeded in the prescribed manner, they would be granted speedy approval in the second phase, he said.
Citing the example of an area in Kannur, Mr. Ponnuraj said that some real-estate agents were involved in the sale of about 3 cents of land to some poor people and the entire transaction had been completed in an improper way. As a result, the area lacked basic infrastructure such as roads and underground drainage, he said.
The proposed information centre would not only benefit the people but also help the district administration in ensuring planned development, Mr. Ponnuraj said.
