Want to know how you can upload or edit content on the Wikipedia in your own (Indian) language?
If yes, you may head to the Eric Mathias Hall, IT Block, St. Aloysius College on Saturday. The Department of Mass Communications of the college and its communication club Al Madhyam has organised the “Wiki-Academy”.
Beginning 9 a.m., the one-day workshop will focus on the use of Indian languages in Wikipedia, editing and its application in academics. Registrations are open on Saturday as well.
According to the organisers, Wikipedia editors will speak about its history and its role in making information freely available to people in several languages. They will provide hands-on training on editing and improving articles on Wikipedia.
They are designed to coach academics and other experts in how to contribute to Wikipedia. Their main purpose is to increase the quality and -- to a lesser extent -- the quantity of articles in Wikipedia.
Bring laptop
Besides talks and presentations, it will feature sessions on editing Wikipedia content, group activity and hands-on training. The organisers have requested people to bring their laptops with internet connection cards.
It may be noted that Wikipedia, with 1.3 crore articles (30 lakh in English), is a free web-based and collaborative multilingual encyclopaedia project supported by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. The articles can be edited by anyone who can access the Wikipedia website.
