In order to tap into the potential of the numerous educational institutions in Mangaluru, the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology may consider setting up a National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology here, Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology P.P. Choudhary said.

Talking to reporters here on Wednesday, Mr. Choudhary said he would consider any proposal made for the setting up of an NIEIT centre in Mangaluru. “We will not find a better educational hub anywhere else in the country. There are some brilliant students here,” he said.

Mr. Choudhary said there are 36 NIEITs in the country that offer courses related to manufacturing of electronic devices and in information technology. NIEIT offers both formal and informal courses.

He said his ministry will take steps to strengthen the branch of Software Technology Park of India located in Mangaluru.

Earlier, speaking at a programme to mark the completion of Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA government’s three years rule, Mr. Choudhary said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has brought in great transformation in the administration by working nearly 20 hours a day. Mr. Modi has been working on ways to empower farmers and labourers, whose development was crucial for growth of the country, he said.

Mr. Choudhary said the Centre was going focused on bridging the digital divide between the urban and rural areas. As many as 1 lakh gram panchayats have been connected by the optical fibre network in the last two years. In the next two years, they will connect the remaining 1.5 lakh gram panchayats with the optical fibre network. This will bring Wi-fi hotspots to all villages.
