There is a need to restore the respect that teachers were getting in the past in order to maintain a good societal health, said senior vice-president of Infosys Ramdas Kamath.

Inaugurating the Konkani Teachers Conference here on Wednesday, Mr. Kamath said children and their parents used to hold teachers in high esteem and gave the respect they deserved.

Of late, children and their parents had not been treating the teachers in the same way. The student-teacher relationship has turned bitter. This, he said, was not good for society’s health and development.

The society could become strong only with good education of which teachers were an integral part, he said.

Mr. Kamath said children from the region lacked exposure to make a mark in the globalised environment. Vimala V. Pai, mother of T.V. Mohandas Pai, the chairman of Manipal Global Educational Services, said it was necessary for parents to know Konkani before making their children learn the language.
