Journalists from a cross-section of English and Kannada publications and television channels have come together to condemn the recent acts of intimidation aimed at choking the distribution channels of Kannada daily Karavali Ale.

Seeking immediate deterrent action against those responsible for the attacks, several journalists met City Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh and submitted a memorandum to him.

“There is an atmosphere of fear and my vendors are not willing to stock our paper,” said B.V. Seetharam, Director of Chitra Publications, which brings out the newspaper.

Memorandum

The memorandum said, “The need of the hour is for the police to take visible action against those who are trying to curtail the freedom of the press.”

Mr. Singh said that the Police Department would do everything in its capacity to instil confidence in the vendors of the newspaper.
