The Indian Navy and the State police carried out a joint security exercise inside the Naval Base in Karwar on Thursday. In a press release, the Indian Navy said that there have been two incidents of trespass inside the Naval Base in the last 10 days. Locals have been entering the base in Chendia and Hattikeri area for fishing/tree cutting.
The Navy personnel usually apprehended trespassers and handed them over to the police.
Breach
The expansion of National Highway 66 by a private company has been causing breaches in the boundary wall of the Naval Base at many places. As and when such breach is noticed, search was being carried out in the area by the security personnel from the base and the breach was being repaired.
On Thursday morning, the release said, breach of the boundary wall was noticed between Shankrubagh and Binaga and three tresspassers were sighted near the breach.
As the security personnel of the base went to apprehend them, they ran away.
As usual, the area was searched to ensure that there was no unauthorised person hiding in the area. Since the area is a jungle, for the first time a dog squad of the State police was used in the search. The exercise was called off after a thorough search in the evening.
It is important for persons residing close to the Naval Base to note that the base was declared a prohibited area by the State government on May 15, 2017, the release said.
