Environmentalist N.A. Madhyasta, who was accorded Karanth Puraskar on Wednesday, recalled an incident where Mr. Karanth had questioned his finding of a rare fish variety in a well in Chitpady that was reported in a Kannada newspaper.

Mr. Karanth, he said, had termed the fish a snake. “I wrote back stating that it was indeed a fish and pointed out I had enough experience to distinguish between a fish and an eel. But Karanth was angry with my reaction,” Mr. Madhyasta recalled.
