A local community leader was killed when a speeding private bus rammed into his car at Hosangadi, in Belthangady taluk around noon on Tuesday.

Gunapal Jain (62), former president of Venoor Panchayat and a member of various local Jain basadi committees, was travelling in his hatchback vehicle from his house in Bedopodi towards Venoor when a private bus crashed into his car head-on, said the Venoor police.

Mr. Jain succumbed to injuries in the hospital.

The driver of the bus, Satish, against whom a case has been filed, has absconded, said the police.

KSRTC drivers injured

The drivers of two Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses were injured in an accident near Koote Dargah on National highway 75 on Tuesday morning.

According to the Puttur Traffic Police, around 9.45 a.m., the bus – proceeding towards Uppinangadi from Kukke Subramanya – was hit by another KSRTC bus that was headed to Kukke Subramanya. Dayananda and Mohantesh, the drivers, sustained injuries, while no passengers were hurt.

Man drowns

The body of a daily-wage labourer was found floating in a pond at Deva Moola near Vittal Tuesday morning. Narayan Gowda (45), who has been described in the complaint by his wife Janaki as an alcoholic, has not been traced since he left the house Sunday evening. His body was found in a pond near his home around 10 a.m. on Tuesday, said the Vittal police. Police believe that in a drunken stupor, he might have lost his way and fallen into the pond.

Janaki and Narayan have been married for 10 years and have three children aged below eight.
