October 25, 2012 12:26 pm | Updated 12:26 pm IST - Manipal:

The T.A. Pai Management Institute (TAPMI) organised its first information technology summit ‘SummIT 2012’ on its campus here on October 20. A press release issued by the institute here said the summit acknowledged the criticality of information technology in today’s business.

Participating in the summit, Vidyashankar, principal secretary of the Department of Industry and Commerce, spoke on the impact of IT in governance and environment and how it was affecting the citizens.

Giving examples of various e-governance initiatives, he described how they had been a mixed bag in terms of success and failure. He described how the Union Government, being one of the largest procurers of goods and services, had a massive need for the implementation of IT to make it transparent and improve efficiency.

He told the audience about the nitty-gritty of e-tendering, a component of procurement and how it integrated and turned any system transparent.
