Iron ore-laden trucks banned till November 15

June 21, 2010 05:13 pm | Updated 05:13 pm IST - MANGALORE:

Deputy Commissioner V. Ponnuraj on Friday issued a notification banning trucks transporting iron ore from plying on National Highways 17 and 48 in the district from June 20 to November 15.

This is aimed at preventing the highway stretch in the Shiradi Ghat section from being damaged during the rainy season.

Reason

The notification said that the Executive Engineer of the Mangalore Division of the National Highways, through a letter, had requested for the ban. The letter said that there were possibilities of landslips in the Shiradi Ghat stretch of National Highway 48.

Under such circumstances, movement of trucks carrying iron ore would only add to traffic jams, particularly in the ghat section, the engineer said in his letter.

Potholes on the ghat stretch had already been filled for smooth movement of vehicles during this rainy season, the letter said.
