S.A. Prabhakar Sharma, the Chief Executive Officer of zilla panchayat (ZP), has directed officials to place permanent warning boards near all percolation pits and stone quarries in the district.

Mr. Nayak said at the monthly Karnataka Development Programme (KDP) meeting that this measure was essential to prevent accidental deaths due to people or children falling into these pits. He directed officials to take immediate measures to install these notice boards.

As many as 14 children died last year by accidentally slipping or falling either into percolation pits or into pits created by stone, laterite or clay quarrying during monsoon in the district.

Chairing the meeting, Upendra Nayak, president of Zilla Panchayat, said that the Zilla Panchayat should seek more houses under the Basava Vasati housing scheme. Presently 20 houses were allotted for each Gram Panchayat in the district. There are 146 Gram Panchayats in the district.

The Panchayat Development Officers (PDOs) and village accountants should identify government lands, which could then distributed to the poor who did not have housing sites, he said.
