The wild tiger, which was trapped in a snare and injured near Nidugumba village in Kodagu on the outskirts of Nagarahole National Park on Tuesday, is out of danger and is responding well to the treatment at the Mysore zoo.
The tiger’s left paw was snagged in a barbed wire fence of a coffee estate and was subsequently tranquilised and shifted to the zoo. B.P. Ravi, executive director, Mysore zoo, told The Hindu that the tiger was out of danger and was under observation.
He said the animal would fully recover from the inflammation on the left foot in the next three days.
Meanwhile, wildlife biologist and renowned tiger expert Ullas Karanth has lauded the Forest Department and the local community of Nidugumba for the efficient handling of the tiger in a conflict situation.
Dr. Karanth said the community as a whole acted with responsibility as there was no harassment of the struggling tiger by a mob and the Forest Department staff too acted swiftly to take control of the situation.
This was in contrast with the situation in Wayanad a few days ago where a cornered tiger was first tranquilised and then shot dead amidst chaos created by the mob, he added.
