All schools in Dakshina Kannada will remain closed on Saturday, even as incessant rain on Thursday and Friday threw life out of gear in the district, claiming one life and damaging nine houses.
C. Chame Gowda, Deputy Director of Public Instruction, told The Hindu on Friday that the general studies evaluation examination for fourth, sixth and eighth standard students scheduled for Saturday will be conducted. The consultative meeting on the Nali-Kali education programme for primary school teachers, scheduled for Saturday, will also be conducted at all taluk headquarters.
Woman washed away
S.A. Prabhakar Sharma, Additional Deputy Commissioner, told The Hindu that Pidugu (50), a woman from Valpady village near Moodbidri, was washed away in a stream about 7.30 p.m. on Thursday. Her body was found on Friday.
Mr. Sharma said that nine houses were damaged by heavy rain on Thursday and Friday. One house in Sullia and two in Padavu in Mangalore taluk were completely damaged.
Two houses in Katipalla (in the jurisdiction of the Mangalore City Corporation), two in Madnur in Puttur taluk and one each in Ananthady and Vittla villages in Bantwal taluk were partially damaged.
All major rivers and streams in the district are swollen as the Western Ghats has been receiving heavy rainfall since Thursday.
The police said that the bridge across the Kumaradhara at Kukke Subrahmanya was submerged on Friday evening. The water-level at Uppinangadystood at 24.6 m against the danger level of 29.5 m on Friday evening. The water-level of the Netravati at Bantwal was 7.5 m against the danger level of 8.5 m.
Flights diverted
Director of the Mangalore airport M.R. Vasudeva said that two Air India Express flights were diverted in the morning. A flight from Dubai was diverted to Kochi and another from Kuwait was diverted to Kozhikode.
There was a little delay in the operation of a few domestic flights, he added. Mangalore recorded 202.8 mm of rainfall in 24 hours till 8 a.m. on Friday. Bajpe airport recorded 181.2 mm, Belthangady 170.2 mm, Bantwal 146.6 mm, Puttur 140 mm, Sullia 105.4 mm and Uppinangady 104.8 mm.
Houses damaged in Udupi
Udupi Staff Correspondent reports:
Thirteen houses were damaged and 78 houses in low-lying areas were either flooded or surrounded by water in Udupi district on Friday.
Udupi taluk was the worst affected area. According to the Udupi Taluk Office, low-lying areas in Udyavar, Manipura, Alevoor, Mattu, Matada Kudru, Varambally and Uppoor villages were inundated.
Access to Korangarapady village was cut off as a tree fell on the road.
Gruel centres
Deputy Commissioner P. Hemalatha said that the district administration had set up a gruel centre each at Udyavar and Mattu villages. Seventy families had to be shifted to a gruel centre at Udyavar, where food was provided to 100 people. However, the floods receded by late evening and 70 people returned home.
Food was also provided to the people at the Mattu gruel centre. Most of the rivers in the district were in spate, even as several roads in some areas were damaged, Ms. Hemalatha said.
One house each in Kurkal, Varambally, Harady, Neelavar, Shivalli, Giliyaru and Kote villages were damaged and the overall loss was estimated at Rs. 1.2 lakh.
Karkala taluk
Nine houses in Inna and six houses in Sooda villages were surrounded by water. Boats were put in place to evacuate the people, if such a need arose.
Kundapur taluk
One house each in Kundapur town, and Hadavu, Kollur, Hangalur and Vakwady villages were damaged. The total loss was estimated at Rs. 62,000.
Rainfall
According to official sources, Udupi received 203.02 mm rainfall in 24 hours till 8.30 a.m. on Friday. Kundapur and Karkala received 48.06 mm and 208.07 mm, respectively.
